For drug molecules containing ionizable functional groups (typically amines and carboxylic acids) identifying salt forms of the drug is a key task to improve physico-chemical properties. Salt forms of drugs can dramatically alter the solubility, dissolution rate, and PK profile. They also may offer improved solid-state properties desirable for development. In addition, salt forms may provide better solid-state chemical stability versus the free drug form. Drug salt forms are also an important part of a new drug candidate’s intellectual property portfolio.
