Pharmaceutical Salts: Preparation and Selection

For drug molecules containing ionizable functional groups (typically amines and carboxylic acids) identifying salt forms of the drug is a key task to improve physico-chemical properties. Salt forms of drugs can dramatically alter the solubility, dissolution rate, and PK profile. They also may offer improved solid-state properties desirable for development. In addition, salt forms may provide better solid-state chemical stability versus the free drug form. Drug salt forms are also an important part of a new drug candidate’s intellectual property portfolio.

PDDC consultants have extensive experience preparing and characterizing salt forms of drugs, and will work with you to ensure the salt forms of your drug candidate are fully explored. Our proprietary salt screening methodology is superior to the robotic techniques widely used in the industry. We can work contractually with you to prepare salt forms and/or train your scientists in this area.
